¿Sueñas con trabajar para la NASA y contribuir a la exploración y la innovación en beneficio de la humanidad? Los programas de pasantías de la agencia ofrecen a los estudiantes de secundaria y universitarios la oportunidad de avanzar en la misión de la NASA en aeronáutica, ciencia, tecnología y espacio.  

Claudia Sales, Kassidy McLaughlin y Julio Treviño empezaron sus carreras como pasantes en el Centro de Investigación de Vuelo Armstrong de la NASA en Edwards, California, donde siguen explorando los secretos del universo. Sus experiencias ponen de ejemplo el impacto a largo plazo de los programas STEM de la NASA. STEM es un acrónimo en inglés que hace referencia a las materias de ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas.

Claudia Sales

“Desde niña supe que quería trabajar para la NASA,” dijo Claudia Sales, ingeniera jefa adjunta en funciones del X-59 y líder de certificación de navegabilidad del avión supersónico silencioso experimental de la agencia.

La trayectoria de Sales en la NASA comenzó en 2005 como pasante de Pathways, un programa de trabajo y estudio (cooperativo) de la NASA. Ella trabajó en las ramas de propulsión y estructuras y proyectos como el avión de investigación hipersónico X-43A (Hyper-X) y el vehículo de lanzamiento orbital reutilizable X-37, donde tuvo la oportunidad de realizar cálculos para estimaciones térmicas y análisis de trayectorias. También realizó trabajos de diseño en el taller de Fabricación Experimental de la NASA Armstrong. 

“Mi sueño era formar parte de proyectos de investigación en vuelos únicos,” dijo Sales. “Mi mentor fue increíble al exponerme a una amplia variedad de experiencias y trabajar en algo singular que algún día se implementará en un vehículo aéreo para hacer del mundo un lugar mejor.”

Kassidy McLaughlin

Asimismo, Kassidy McLaughlin, ingeniera de sistemas de vuelo, descubrió que la mentoría y la experiencia práctica como pasante fueron clave para su desarrollo profesional. Actualmente ella dirige el desarrollo de una estación de control terrestre en la NASA Armstrong. 

En la secundaria y la universidad, McLaughlin se inscribió a clases STEM, sabiendo que quería seguir una carrera en ingeniería. Animada por su madre a solicitar una pasantía en la NASA, la carrera de McLaughlin comenzó en 2014 como pasante de la Oficina de Participación STEM de la NASA Armstrong. Más adelante hizo la transición al programa Pathways.  

“Mi mentor me dio las herramientas necesarias y me animó a hacer preguntas,” dijo McLaughlin. “Me ayudó a ver que era capaz de cualquier cosa si me lo proponía.” 

Durante cinco rotaciones como pasante, ella trabajó en el proyecto Sistemas de Aeronaves no tripulados integrados en el Sistema Nacional del Espacio Aéreo (UAS in the NAS, por su acrónimo inglés). “Es una sensación muy gratificante estar en una sala de control cuando algo en lo que has trabajado está volando,” dijo McLaughlin. “La NASA Armstrong ofrecía algo especial en cuanto a la gente,” dijo McLaughlin. “La cultura en el centro es muy amable y todos son muy acogedores.”

Julio Treviño

Julio Treviño, ingeniero jefe de operaciones del proyecto Global Hawk SkyRange de la NASA, garantiza la navegabilidad a lo largo de las fases de planificación, integración y vuelo de sistemas y vehículos singulares. También es controlador de misión certificado, director de misión e ingeniero de pruebas de vuelo para varias aeronaves de la agencia. 

Al igual que McLaughlin, Treviño comenzó su carrera en 2018 como pasante de Pathway en la rama de Dinámica y Controles en la NASA Armstrong. Esa experiencia le abrió el camino hacia el éxito tras graduarse en ingeniería mecánica. 

“Como pasante, tuve la oportunidad de trabajar en el diseño y la creación de un modelo de batería para un avión totalmente eléctrico,” dijo Treviño. “Se publicó oficialmente como modelo de software de la NASA para que lo utilice cualquier persona en la agencia.” 

Treviño también reconoce la cultura y la gente de la NASA como lo mejor de su pasantía. “Tuve mentores que me apoyaron mucho durante mi tiempo como pasante, y el hecho de que todos aqui realmente amen el trabajo que hacen es increíble,” él dijo.  

2025 Application Deadlines

Cada año, la NASA ofrece a más de 2,000 estudiantes la oportunidad de influir en la misión de la agencia a través de pasantías. Las fechas de solicitud para el otoño de 2025 es el 16 de mayo.

      Rich Burns of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and John Blevins of Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, were selected out of 350 nominees and are among 23 individuals and teams honored for their achievements as federal employees. They will be recognized at a ceremony in Washington on Tuesday, June 17, that also will be live streamed on the Sammies website. The honorees will be commended via videos and presenter remarks and receive medals for their achievements.
      Named after the founder of the Partnership for Public Service, the 2025 Service to America Medals awards celebrate federal employees who provided critical public services and made outstanding contributions to the health, safety, and national security of our country.
      “Rich and John exemplify the spirit of exploration and service that defines NASA and our nation’s civil servants,” said acting NASA Administrator Janet Petro. “Their leadership, ingenuity, and dedication have not only advanced America’s space program but also inspired the next generation of innovators. We are proud to see their achievements recognized among the very best of federal service.”
      Richard Burns, project manager for the Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security – Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and honoree of the 2025 Samuel J. Heyman Service to America MedalsCredit: NASA Burns was the project manager of the Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security – Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) mission to collect a sample from an asteroid and oversaw operations from the developmental stage to the successful landing of the spacecraft’s Sample Return Capsule.
      The mission launched on Sept. 18, 2016, and after a nearly four-year journey, the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft successfully collected a sample from the asteroid Bennu on Oct. 20, 2020, which returned to Earth on Sept. 24, 2023, providing scientists with 120 grams of pristine material to study, the largest amount ever collected from an asteroid. Working to solidify OSIRIS-REx as a success, Burns set up multiple partnerships and communicated frequently with scientists, large and small businesses, NASA centers, and others to ensure the mission’s vision was carried out though each phase.
      During the mission, Burns had to handle unique challenges that required adapting to new situations. These included improving flight software to help the spacecraft avoid hazardous parts of Bennu’s rocky surface and working with NASA leaders to find a way to best protect the sample collected from Bennu after a large stone propped the collection canister open. Finally, when the sample was set to return to Earth, Burns worked extensively with NASA and military partners to prepare for the landing, focusing on the safety of the public along with the integrity of the sample to ensure the final part of the mission was a success.
      Burns helped OSIRIS-REx exceed its objectives all while under the original budget, allowing  NASA to share a portion of the sample with more than 80 research projects and make new discoveries about the possible origins of life on our planet. The spacecraft, now known as Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification and Security – Apophis Explorer, is scheduled to rendezvous with the asteroid Apophis in 2029.
      “It’s humbling to accept an award based on the achievements of the amazingly talented, dedicated, and innovative OSIRIS-REx team,” Burns said. “I consider myself privileged to be counted among a team of true explorers who let no obstacle stand in the way of discovery.”

This included calculating structural needs, thermal analyses of the effects, and studies of vibrations, acoustics, propulsion integration, among other work.
      Artemis I, the first test flight of the SLS rocket, successfully launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Nov. 16, 2022. In the time leading up to and during launch, Blevins led the team integrating the hardware for the mission working  to address unexpected events while SLS was on the pad prior to launch. This included significant lightning storms and two hurricanes impacting Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
      Blevins built a working coalition of engineering teams across the agency that previously did not exist. His ability to forge strong relationships on the various teams across the agency allowed for the successful launch of Artemis I. He continues to lead the engineering team behind SLS as they prepare for Artemis II, the second flight of SLS and the first crewed lunar mission of the 21st century.
      “This is a reflection on the hard work and dedication of the entire Artemis Team,” Blevins said. “I am working with an incredibly competent, dedicated team agencywide that goes above and beyond to promote the space exploration goals of our nation. I am honored to accept the award on their behalf.”

      Preparations for Next Moonwalk Simulations Underway (and Underwater)

      NASA’s Student Launch competition celebrated its 25th anniversary on May 4, just north of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, bringing together more than 980 middle school, high school, college, and university students from across the U.S. to showcase and launch their high-powered rocketry designs.
      The event marked the conclusion of the nine-month challenge where teams designed, built, and launched more than 50 rockets carrying scientific payloads—trying to achieve altitudes between 4,000 and 6,000 feet before executing a successful landing and payload mission.
      “This is really about mirroring the NASA engineering design process,” Kevin McGhaw, director of NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement Southeast Region, said. “It gives students hands-on experience not only in building and designing hardware, but in the review and testing process.  We are helping to prepare and inspire students to get out of classroom and into the aerospace industry as a capable and energizing part of our future workforce.”
      NASA announced James Madison University as the overall winner of the agency’s 2025 Student Launch challenge, followed by North Carolina State University, and The University of Alabama in Huntsville. A complete list of challenge winners can be found on the agency’s Student Launch webpage.

NASA/Krisdon Manecke Each year, a payload challenge is issued to the university teams, and this year’s task took inspiration from the agency’s Artemis missions, where NASA will send astronauts to explore the Moon for scientific discovery, economic benefit, and to build the foundation for the first crewed missions to Mars. Teams were challenged to include sensor data from STEMnauts, non-living objects representing astronauts. The STEMnaut “crew” had to relay real-time data to the student team’s mission control, just as the Artemis astronaut crew will do as they explore the lunar surface.  
      Student Launch is one of NASA’s seven Artemis Student Challenges – activities that connect student ingenuity with NASA’s work returning to the Moon under Artemis in preparation for human exploration of Mars.
      The competition is managed by Marshall’s Office of STEM Engagement. Additional funding and support are provided by the Office of STEM Engagement’s Next Generation STEM project, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, the agency’s Space Operations Mission Directorate, Northrup Grumman, National Space Club Huntsville, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, National Association of Rocketry, Relativity Space, and Bastion Technologies Inc.

      2 Min Read NASA Seeks Commercial Feedback on Space Communication Solutions

Credits: NASA / Morgan Johnson NASA is seeking information from U.S. and international companies about Earth proximity relay communication and navigation capabilities as the agency aims to use private industry satellite communications services for emerging agency science missions.

      “As part of NASA’s Communications Services Project, the agency is working with private industry to solve challenges for future exploration,” said Kevin Coggins, deputy associate administrator of NASA’s SCaN Program. “Through this effort, NASA missions will have a greater ability to command spacecraft, resolve issues in flight, and bring home more data and scientific discoveries collected across the solar system.”

      In November 2024, NASA announced the TDRS (Tracking and Data Relay Satellite) system, the agency’s network of satellites relaying communications from the International Space Station, ground controls on Earth, and spacecraft, will support only existing missions.

      NASA, as one of many customers, will obtain commercial satellite services rather than owning and operating a replacement for the existing satellite system. As NASA transitions to commercial relay services, the agency will leverage commercial capabilities to ensure support for future missions and stimulate private investment into the Earth proximity region. Commercial service offerings could become available to NASA missions as early as 2028 and will continue to be demonstrated and validated through 2031.

      NASA’s SCaN issued a Request for Information on May 30. Responses are due by 5 p.m. EDT on Friday, July 11.

      NASA’s SCaN Program serves as the management office for the agency’s space communications and navigation. More than 100 NASA and non-NASA missions rely on SCaN’s two networks, the Near Space Network and the Deep Space Network, to support astronauts aboard the International Space Station and future Artemis missions, monitor Earth’s weather, support lunar exploration, and uncover the solar system and beyond.

      Auburn University’s project, “Dynamic Ecosystems for Mars ECLSS Testing, Evaluation, and Reliability (DEMETER),” won top prize in NASA’s 2025 Revolutionary Aerospace Systems – Academic Linkage (RASC-AL) Competition Forum. National Institute of Aerospace A team from Auburn University took top honors in NASA’s 2025 Revolutionary Aerospace Systems – Academic Linkage (RASC-AL) Competition Forum, where undergraduate and graduate teams competed to develop new concepts for operating on the Moon, Mars and beyond. 

      Auburn’s project, “Dynamic Ecosystems for Mars Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) Testing, Evaluation, and Reliability (DEMETER)” advised by Dr. Davide Guzzetti, took home top prize out of 14 Finalist Teams from academic institutions across the nation. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University took second place overall for their concept, “Adaptive Device for Assistance and Maintenance (ADAM),” advised by Dr. Kevin Shinpaugh. The University of Maryland took third place overall with their project, “Servicing Crane Outfitted Rover for Payloads, Inspection, Operations, N’stuff (SCORPION),” advised by Dr. David Akin, Nich Bolatto, and Charlie Hanner. 

      The first and second place overall winning teams will present their work at the 2025 AIAA Accelerating Space Commerce, Exploration, and New Discovery (ASCEND) Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada in July. 

      Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University took second place overall in NASA’s 2025 Revolutionary Aerospace Systems – Academic Linkage (RASC-AL) Competition Forum for their concept, “Adaptive Device for Assistance and Maintenance (ADAM).”National Institute of Aerospace The RASC-AL Competition, which took place from June 2-4, 2025, in Cocoa Beach, Florida, is a unique initiative designed to bridge the gap between academia and the aerospace industry, empowering undergraduate and graduate students to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world challenges in space exploration. This year’s themes included “Sustained Lunar Evolution – An Inspirational Moment,” “Advanced Science Missions and Technology Demonstrators for Human-Mars Precursor Campaign,” and “Small Lunar Servicing and Maintenance Robot.”  

      “The RASC-AL Competition cultivates students who bring bold, imaginative thinking to the kinds of complex challenges we tackle at NASA,” said Dan Mazanek, RASC-AL program sponsor and senior space systems engineer at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. “These teams push the boundaries of what’s possible in space system design and offer new insights. These insights help build critical engineering capabilities, preparing the next generation of aerospace leaders to step confidently into the future of space exploration.” 

      As NASA continues to push the boundaries of space exploration, the RASC-AL Competition stands as an opportunity for aspiring aerospace professionals to design real-world solutions to complex problems facing the Agency. By engaging with the next generation of innovators, NASA can collaborate with the academic community to crowd-source new solutions for the challenges of tomorrow.

Students have the opportunity to interact with NASA officials and industry experts and develop relationships that could lead to participation in other NASA student research programs.   

      RASC-AL is sponsored by the Strategies and Architectures Office within the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters, and by the Space Mission Analysis Branch within the Systems Analysis and Concepts Directorate at NASA Langley. It is administered by the National Institute of Aerospace.

      Cuando se prueba un avión de última generación de la NASA, se necesitan herramientas especializadas para realizar pruebas y capturar datos, pero si esas herramientas necesitan mantenimiento, hay que esperar hasta que se reparen. A menos que tengas un respaldo. Por eso, recientemente la NASA ha calibró una nueva sonda de deteccíon de impactos para capturar datos de ondas de choque cuando el silencioso avión de investigación supersónico X-59 de la agencia inicie sus vuelos de prueba. 
      Cuando un avión vuela más rápido que la velocidad del sonido, produce ondas de choque que viajan a través del aire, creando fuertes estampidos sónicos. El X-59 desviará esas ondas de choque, produciendo sólo un silencioso golpe supersónico. En las últimas semanas, la NASA ha completado los vuelos de calibración de una nueva sonda de detección de impactos de campo cercano, un aparato en forma de cono que captará datos sobre las ondas de choque que generará el X-59. 
      Esta sonda está montada en un avión de investigación F-15D que volará muy cerca del X-59 para recopilar los datos que necesita la NASA. La nueva unidad servirá como la sonda de campo cercano principal de la NASA, con un modelo idéntico desarrollado por la NASA el año pasado actuará como reserva montada en otro F-15B. 
      Las dos unidades significan que el equipo del X-59 tiene una alternativa lista en caso de que la sonda principal necesite mantenimiento o reparaciones. Para pruebas de vuelo como las del X-59, donde la recopilación de datos es crucial y las operaciones giran en torno a plazos ajustados, condiciones meteorológicas y otras variables, las copias de respaldo de los equipos críticos ayudan a garantizar la continuidad, mantener los plazos y preservar la eficiencia de las operaciones. 
      “Si le ocurre algo a la sonda, como una falla en unsensor, no hay una solución fácil,” explica Mike Frederick, investigador principal de la sonda en el Centro de Investigación de Vuelos Armstrong de la NASA en Edwards, California. “El otro factor es el propio avión. Si uno necesita mantenimiento, no queremos retrasar los vuelos del X-59.” 
      Para calibrar la nueva sonda, el equipo midió las ondas de choque de un avión de investigación F/A-18 de la NASA. Los resultados preliminares indicaron que la sonda captó con éxito los cambios de presión asociados a las ondas de choque, de acuerdo con las expectativas del equipo. Frederick y su equipo ahora están revisando los datos para confirmar que se alinean con los modelos matemáticos en tierra y cumplen las normas de precisión requeridas para los vuelos X-59. 
      Los investigadores de la NASA en Armstrong se están preparando para vuelos adicionales con las sondas principal y de respaldo en sus aviones F-15. Cada avión volará a velocidad supersónico y recopilará datos de las ondas de choque del otro. El equipo está trabajando para validar tanto la sonda principal como la de respaldo para confirmar la redundancia total;en otras palabras, asegurarse de que tengan un respaldo fiable y listo para usar.
